US Homeland Security: No Cuban and Haitian Boat Refugees

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has warned would-be Cuban and Haitian migrants against trying to enter the United States illegally by boat, saying the risk “not worth taking.”

Mayorkas said that the time is never right to attempt migration by sea.

“To those who risk their lives doing so, this risk is not worth taking,” he added.

He also highlighted the dangers of crossing the Caribbean Sea and the Florida Straits by boat.

“Allow me to be clear: if you take to the sea, you will not come to the United States. Any migrant intercepted at sea, regardless of their nationality, will not be permitted to enter the United States,” he said.

According to Mayorkas, the US Coast Guard has been patrolling the Florida Straits and the Caribbean for illegal immigrants, but no spike has been seen thus far.

His remarks come after Vice President Kamala Harris was widely chastised for voicing a similar opinion during a trip to Guatemala last month.
