UNSC Demands Immediate Release of UAE Vessel With 7 Indian Onboard From Houthis

The United Nations Security Council on Friday demanded the immediate release of a UAE-Flagged Cargo Vessel that was seized by Houthi rebels off the port of Hodeidah in Yemen and has seven Indian nationals onboard.

The members of the council condemned the seizure of the Rwabee vessel, and the detention of its crew members, the council said in a press statement on Friday.

“All efforts must be made to secure the safe release of crew members,” the statement said, calling on all sides to resolve the issue quickly and underlined the importance of freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea in accordance with international law.

India also called for the immediate release of the seven Indian crew members on board the UAE-flagged cargo vessel.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti, speaking at a UNSC meeting on Yemen, expressed grave concern over the seizure and detention of the UAE vessel.

Tirumurti called for the immediate release of 7 Indian crew members, expressed deep concern about their safety and well-being and that Houthis should ensure their safety till release.
