United States Senator Bernie Sanders accused fellow Senator Joe Manchin of “intentionally sabotaging” President Joe Biden’s agenda by rejecting to support legislation focused on climate change and tax changes.
“If you check the record, six months ago, I made it clear that you have people like Manchin, [Kryzten] Sinema to a lesser degree, who are intentionally sabotaging the president’s agenda, what the American people want, what a majority of us in the Democratic caucus want,” Sanders told ABC’s “This Week” on July 17.
“The problem was that we continue to talk Manchin like he was serious. He was not. This is a guy who is a major recipient of fossil fuel money, a guy who has received campaign contributions from 25 Republican billionaires,” Sanders added.
Last week, Manchin of West Virginia said that he would not vote for a party-line proposal of a budget reconciliation bill because he did not support the provisions that increase spending to combat climate change and close tax loopholes.
Manchin said that he wanted to delay major decisions on the bill because he wanted to see July inflation figures first.
However, Sanders was not convinced with Manchin’s justification, calling it “the same nonsense that Manchin has been talking about for a year.”
Sanders said the people of West Virginia would support the provisions of the bill.
“In my humble opinion, you know, Manchin represents the very wealthiest people in this country, not working families in West Virginia or America,” Sanders said.
