Rep. Matt Gaetz is under investigation for an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, along with possibly violating sex trafficking laws.
According to the New York Times, Gaetz’s alleged sexual relationship with the 17-year-old girl occurred in 2019. The report also states that investigators are actively trying to determine if Gaetz paid the underage girl to travel with him across state lines, which would be a violation of federal sex trafficking laws.
The initial investigation was launched towards the end of Donald Trump’s presidency when Bill Barr was still the attorney general.
News of the investigation came out shortly after Gaetz announced he would not be seeking re-election.
Gaetz’s lawyers informed him he was under an “investigation regarding sexual conduct with women,” however, he told the New York Times he could not recall the specific details of the investigation.
“I only know it has to do with women,” he said. “I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward.”
He told Axios, “I have definitely, in my single days, provided for women I’ve dated. You know, I’ve paid for flights, for hotel rooms. I’ve been, you know, generous as a partner. I think someone is trying to make that look criminal when it is not.”
Gaetz stressed to Axios that any allegations against him were “false” and he is “absolutely” confident that none of his ex-partners were minors.
