U.S. House Jan. 6 Committee Issues New Subpoenas for Trump Allies

The United States House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot issued on Jan. 11 new subpoenas to three former White House officials in Donald Trump’s inner circle.

The Committee announced that they issued subpoenas to former White House strategists Andy Surabian and Arthur Schwartz, whom it said were communicating with Donald Trump Jr., television news personality Kimberly Guilfoyle, and others regarding the Jan. 6 rally at the Ellipse before the insurrection took place.

The Committee also subpoenaed former White House official Ross Worthington who helped draft the speech former President Donald Trump delivered at the Ellipse rally, which included allegations of election fraud.

“Protests on that day escalated into an attack on our democracy. Protestors became rioters who carried out a violent attempt to derail the peaceful transfer of power. We have reason to believe the individuals we’ve subpoenaed today have relevant information,” Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson said.

The Committee said in its letters to Surabian and Schwartz that it is interested in communications related to plans for the rally, including concerns around proposed speakers like “Stop the Steal” organizer Ali Alexander and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

The Committee further said that it is also interested in communications regarding appearance fees for certain people who spoke at the rally.

In its letter to Worthington, the Committee said it has documents that show Worthington helped draft Trump’s rally speech that included lines like “fight much harder” and “stop the steal.”

The Committee also noted that Trump encouraged the crowd to march to the Capitol, telling them “I’ll be there with you.”

The Committee gave the three individuals until Jan. 24 to produce relevant documents and it set deposition dates from the end of January through the first week of February.
