U.K. Border Force Intercepts 50 Migrants Illegally Crossing the English Channel in Small Boats

United Kingdom (UK) intercepted 50 migrants in small three boats after attempting to cross the English Channel on Sunday.

French authorities said they have prevented a fifth crossing with 17 people in a small boat after they have confirmed that the fourth boat, which also crossed have returned to France.

UK border force has detained more than 650 people trying to cross the Channel in small boats so far during 2021 which doubled the number who tried to cross during the same period in 2020.

A Home Office spokesperson said, “People should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and not risk their lives making these dangerous crossings. We are continuing to pursue the criminals behind these illegal crossings.”

“The government is also returning illegal migrants who have no right to stay in the UK to safe countries,” the spokesperson added.

In January, new rules were introduced which made asylum claims “inadmissible” where people have traveled through safe countries to get to the UK through illegal routes, the spokesperson also said.
