A man from Texas died on Thursday after a jury convicted him of five counts of child sexual assault and drank a bottle of liquid in the Denton County courtroom.
Edward Leclair, 57, started drinking from a plastic water bottle filled with what appeared to be clear liquid after the Denton County jury read the first count and returned a guilty verdict.
Mike Howard, Leclair’s lawyer, said Leclair began drinking and shaking while the Denton County jury was announcing the verdict.
“I looked over and noticed him drinking. His hand was shaking. At the time, I thought it was shaking because of the verdict. Then he kept drinking and drinking,” Howard said.
Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck told the Denton Record-Chronicle the liquid Leclair drank appeared “cloudy,” though it is unclear what was in his plastic water bottle.
