Swedish King, Queen Test Positive for COVID-19

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden tested positive for COVID-19 on Jan. 3 evening, the Swedish Royal Court announced in a statement on Jan. 4.

According to the statement, the 75-year-old king and the 78-year-old queen have mild symptoms but are feeling “well” under the circumstances.

Both the king and the queen are fully vaccinated and have received their booster shots, the Royal Court said.

The statement added that the royal couple have isolated themselves at home and contact tracing is underway.

The announcement comes as Sweden faces an increase in COVID-19 cases due to the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The Swedish king and queen join a growing list of European royalty who have tested positive for the virus in recent weeks, including Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, and Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands.
