‘Squid Game’ Star O Yeong-Su Becomes First Korean Actor to Win a Golden Globe

Veteran South Korean actor O Yeong-su made history on Jan. 9 after becoming the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe for his supporting role in the hit Netflix series, “Squid Game.”

Yeong-su, 77, won Best Supporting Actor in Television at the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards for his role as Oh Il-nam, also known as Player 001.

Yeong-su’s Golden Globe win marks his first-ever victory at an international awards show.

Netflix confirmed in October that “Squid Game,” which premiered on Sept. 17, was its “biggest-ever series at launch.”

This year’s Golden Globes took place at a private ceremony due to controversies the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been facing over a lack of diversity and other ethical questions related to financial benefits.
