Ransomware Attack Cripples Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Bernalillo County in New Mexico has reported a suspected ransomware attack that affected several institutions including the jail.

“Bernalillo County has discovered what is believed to be a ransomware attack on county systems.  The county has taken affected systems offline and has severed network connections, ” said Bernalillo County on January 5.

County spokesman Tom Thorpe said county officials lost access to the affected systems and that they are unaware of any demand in connection with the suspected attack.

The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) was one of the most affected departments and was locked down because of the attack.

The ransomware attack reportedly also disabled the facility’s surveillance cameras and data-collection capabilities

“Right now, we are not allowing in visitors or lawyers, or really anybody at this point in time,” said Tia Bland, communications director for Bernalillo County.

Currently, a week after the ransomware attack, most of the county’s buildings are still closed.

No group has taken responsibility for the attack while there is no information if personal data has been leaked.
