Peru’s foreign minister Elizabeth Astete has stepped down from her office, as one of the latest politicians to do so after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine ahead of the public.
In a statement she posted on Twitter Monday the minister said, “I am aware of the serious mistake I made, which is why I decided not to receive the second dose.”
She said she received the first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine on January 22, which was offered to her by the Cayetano Heredia University.
The health minister Pilar Mazzetti also resigned on Friday, following the removal of former president Martin Vizcarra, who also took the vaccine early.
Peru is now struggling with more than a million cases of the coronavirus, reporting 43,703 deaths on Monday.
