One Dead, 17 Injured After Car Plows into Crowd at Pennsylvania Bar

A man plowed through a crowd during a fundraising event at a Pennsylvania bar on Aug. 13, killing one person and injuring 17 others, before fatally attacking his mother in a separate incident.

In a statement on Aug. 14, Pennsylvania State Police identified the suspect as Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes, 24.

State investigators said in a criminal complaint that Reyes confessed to the homicides.

The crash occurred outside the Intoxicology Department bar in Berwick at about 6: 15 p.m. local time on Aug. 13 during a fundraiser for the victims of a house fire in Nescopeck earlier this month.

Officials have not released details about the victims.

Geisinger Medical Center spokesperson Mike McMullen said that it received 15 patients after the crash, with five in critical condition and three in fair condition. Seven others have been treated and released.

Shortly after the crash, state troopers received a call about a man “physically assaulting” a woman less than a mile away in Nescopeck.

Local police arrested Reyes in connection with a woman who was found dead at the scene.

Local coroner Francis Hacken confirmed on Aug. 14 that the woman was Reyes’ mother, Rosa, who died of multiple traumatic injuries after being struck by a vehicle and then beaten with a hammer.

Reyes told troopers that he had argued with his mother about money and other matters, according to a criminal complaint.

Intoxicology Department said on Facebook that it will be “closed until further notice.”

Officials said that Reyes was not a suspect in the Aug. 5 fire that killed seven adults and three children. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
