New South Wales Reports Its First Omicron Death

The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) reported its first death linked to the Omicron COVID-19 variant on Dec. 27.

At a press briefing, Dr. Christine Selvey of the NSW Health announced that the state’s first Omicron death involved a man in his 80s from western Sydney who died at Westmead Hospital.

According to NSW Health, the man had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had underlying health conditions.

NSW also reported two other COVID-19 deaths: a woman in her 90s and a man in his 80s — both of whom had received two doses of the vaccine and had underlying health conditions.

The deaths come as NSW recorded 6,324 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

NSW also said that 520 COVID-19 cases are currently in the hospital, with 55 in intensive care and 17 of whom require ventilation.
