A Rwandan refugee confessed to stabbing and killing a Catholic priest in Vendée, France.
According to the police, the suspect was involved in the arson of the Nantes cathedral last year.
The suspect reportedly surrendered himself to the Mortagne-sur-Sèvre gendarmerie on Monday morning and confessed to the murder of an unnamed priest.
Police later discovered that the suspect’s confession was true and found the body in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre at the premises of the community of the missionary brothers Montfortain.
The suspect had been living with the missionary brothers for months and was due to be expelled from the country but was delayed until the initial judicial order against him was lifted.
French Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin said that he sends “all [his] support to the Catholics of our country after the dramatic assassination of a priest in Vendée,” and that he will go there in person.
