Myanmar Celebrity Paing Takhon Sentenced Three Years in Jail

The legal team of Paing Takhon, a leading Myanmar actor, singer, and model said Monday a junta court sentenced the celebrity to three years in jail with hard labor for supporting pro-democracy protests.

“The family is deeply saddened about his sentence,” the actor’s legal advisor Khin Maung Myint said, adding they were considering whether to appeal.

Takhon, 25, a star in Myanmar and Thailand, had been active in the mass protests at rallies and on social media after the February coup in Myanmar.

“Help us stop crime against humanity,” Takhon posted on Instagram.

Takhon was arrested in Yangon in April as the junta hunted more than 100 celebrities for supporting the movement.

The junta later published a list of some 120 celebrities wanted for arrest, some of them are still on the run, according to local media reports.

In May, celebrity beauty queen Htar Htar Htet posted a photo of herself on Facebook carrying an assault rifle.

“The time has come to fight back,” Htet wrote.
