Canary Islands Security and Emergencies area of the Government advised residents to evacuate their homes on the Spanish island of La Palma on Wednesday as the Cumbre Vieja volcano continued to spew lava more than a month after it first erupted.
“[Translated in English] Given the advance of the lava flows that run further northwest and their proximity to the perimeter already evacuated #PEVOLCA orders the evacuation of Las Martelas (The Plains of Aridane), Marina Alta, Marina Baja, La Condesa and Cuesta Zapata (Tazacorte),” 112 Caranias said in a tweet.
112 Caranias said people should vacate their homes and go to Camilo León Fighting Field of Los Llanos de Aridane and Tazacorte Sports Center assembly points.
As lava flows progressed further northwest, 112 Canarias claimed between 40 and 50 residences were under the new evacuation order.
According to the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service, the lava flow had destroyed 2,185 buildings as of October 19.
