A man dressed as a ninja and armed with a sword injured two French police officers in the western city of Cherbourg on Dec. 2, authorities said.
“During an intervention on a vehicle theft in Cherbourg, two police officers were injured,” French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter.
Police subsequently shot the attacker three times and flew him to the hospital via a helicopter in serious condition.
“He was neutralized with bullets,” the Cherbourg press office told CNN.
The attacker was dressed in black in the traditional style of Japanese ninja fighters. His identity, including his nationality, was not immediately made available.
The assailant allegedly caused an accident with a stolen vehicle, then attacked the two officers who reported to the scene, injuring one in the face and one in the chin, at 3:45 p.m. local time near a gas station of the Leclerc supermarket chain.
Authorities said the officers were now in good condition.
