KFC Japan Urges Costumers to Adopt Online Order and Pickup Schemes for Christmas

KFC Holdings Japan, the Japanese licensor of the Yum! Brands Inc’s franchise is encouraging consumers to purchase online and pick up their chicken at a certain time instead of queueing this season. 

The week leading up to Christmas is the firm’s busiest sales week, and KFC Holdings Japan expects that the change will help sustain those revenues, while also allowing consumers to continue a tradition that dates back to the 1970s.

According to company legend, the Christmas ad was inspired by international consumers in Japan who complained about not being able to obtain turkey over the holidays. In 1974, the first “Kentucky for Christmas” promotion was launched, aimed at couples and featuring a bucket of chicken and a bottle of wine.

Since the promotion’s inception,  KFC Holdings Japan has distributed commemorative plates as well as figurines of KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders costumed as Santa Claus.

KFC Japan has accelerated the start of the promotion this year and given pricing incentives to early birds to comply with the COVID-19 requirements.
