Burmese Police have detained Japanese journalist Yuki Kitazumi during a protest in the commercial capital of Yangon.
Kitazumi, who runs Yangon Media Professionals, used to be a journalist with the Nikkei business daily.
Kitazumi was arrested along with 20 other protesters after police attempted to disperse an ongoing demonstration.
“I didn’t witness it, but I received a message from him via Messenger app around 11:30 that he got arrested,” said Kitazumi’s Myanmar colleague, Linn Nyan Htun.
Kitazumi was later released and said he was unharmed after other media outlets showed footage of him walking out of the Sanchaung township police station after 4 p.m. local time.
Kitazumi is the second foreign national known to have been detained since the coup after Aung Suu Kyi’s adviser Sean Turnell who is still detained.
