Italy Records 61,046 COVID-19 Cases, 133 Deaths on Sunday

The Italian Health Ministry said the new COVID-19 cases on Sunday reflected a steep drop in the number of tests after three consecutive days of recording more than 100 thousand cases.

The ministry has recorded 61,046 COVID-19 positive cases, with the daily tally of COVID-related deaths from 111 to 133, a total record of 137,646 deaths since February 2020.

Patients in hospital with COVID-19, except those in intensive care, stood at 11,756 on Sunday, up from 11,265 a day earlier.

The ministry said the latest COVID-19 tests it carried out were only around 278,654, compared with a previous 1.08 million.

Last week, some medical staff said the new records were putting them under strain as the daily coronavirus infection rate soared past 100,000.

“We are inundated with requests for admission. It’s a constant pressure,” Rome Covid Hospital Medical Director Antonino Marchese said, adding that he expected the numbers to rise further.
