Iraq’s New Parliament To Convene First Session In January

The President of Iraq Barham Salih said he has signed a decree on Thursday, calling on the new members of the parliament to convene their first session on 9th of January as part of preparation of the next government.

He hoped that the new parliament would form a capable and effective government that safeguards the national interest of Iraq and protects the sovereignty of the country.

The new members would elect a speaker and two deputies in their first session.

A Shia scholar, Moqtada al-Sadr is an ultimate winner in the October 10 election and his bloc, already the biggest in the 329-seat parliament, will expand to 73 seats from 54.

The Fata bloc of factions, the main rival of Sadr, has witnessed its parliamentary representation collapse to just 17 seats from 48.
