Unidentified gunmen kidnapped 317 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe town, Zamfara state.
The attack happened on Friday, at about 1:00 AM local time.
An eyewitness reported that the gunmen arrived in pick-up trucks and motorcycles. Some of the gunmen wore uniforms of government security forces and pretended to be on official business before they broke into the hostels and forcefully evacuated the students.
The Nigerian Police Force has said that members of the force, as well as a military contingent, have been deployed to Jangebe to investigate the issue and search for the students.
This is the latest attack on schools that have gone on since the Chibok girls were kidnapped in 2014 by Boko Haram.
Authorities are yet to identify the gunmen but suspect that they are part of a criminal gang that abducts schoolchildren for ransom.
