The Chinese government has locked down the city of Xiamen and enhanced safety protocols in other cities in the province of Fujian after detecting COVID-19 outbreaks linked to the Delta strain.
At least 85 of the 135 cases were reported in Xianyou while patient zero was a parent of a child at the Putou Primary School.
New cases were soon reported in Quanzhou and Xiamen and continued to rise.
Fujian Communist Party secretary Yin Li said that they would “act fast and race with time to win the battle to annihilate Covid-19.”
As a safety precaution, schools across Fujian have gone back to online learning while public establishments were closed off.
Xiamen vice-mayor Liao Huasheng said they are hoping to test at least 1/5 of their 5.6 million.
All festivities for the Mid-Autumn Festival have been canceled along with other holidays or big gatherings.
To prevent the outbreak from spreading outside Fujian, airports in neighboring Guangdong provinces such as Zhuhai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou have started testing Fujian residents upon arrival.
