Facebook and Google announced that they are funding twp new undersea internet cables running from the US West Coast to Singapore and Indonesia to boost internet speeds.
The new cables named Bifrost and Echo were planned after cable projects linking the US and Hong Kong were abandoned following national security concerns raised by the Trump administration
According to Facebook, Echo and Bifrost will increase the data capacity between the regions by 70% and improve internet reliability.
The cables will be manufactured in cooperation with local partners and are expected to be finished in a few years.
Echo is expected to be finished by 2023 and would be built in cooperation with Indonesian telecommunications provider XL Axiata.
Bifrost will be completed a year later and would be built with Singaporean conglomerate Keppel and Telin, a subsidiary of South African telecommunications provider Telkom.
The cost of the projects however have not been disclosed and will be subjected to government regulations.
