Egypt To Build Its 1st Nuclear Reactor: Officials

The government of Egypt announced preparations to build the first power unit at the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant in July of this year.

The CEO of Rosatom Group, Alexey Likhachev said that Cairo wants to do everything so that the first phase of the power unit will be completed in the summer of this year.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority of Egypt (NPPA) Dr. Amgad Al-Wakeel said that all necessary documents were completed to establish the first and second units of the power plant.

“All the essential documents were handed over to the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Control Authority,” Al-Wakeel added.

Al-Wakeel said that NPP is a corporation with advanced third generation (Gen-3+) reactor technology, and has the most advanced technology to date.

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohammed Shaker had recently said that the first unit of the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant is expected to be completed by 2026.

On December 11, 2017, the government of Egypt and Rosatom Company had signed several projects including commercial contracts for the construction of the El-Dabaa plant.
