Dutch Police Arrest Couple for Escaping COVID Quarantine

Dutch police reported that they have arrested and detained a couple who escaped from a COVID-19 quarantine hotel in Schipol.

The Spanish man and Portuguese woman came from a flight form South Africa amid international caution against the Omicron COVID-19 strain.

They were arrested onboard a plane bound for Spain just shortly after their absence was  reported at the hotel at around 6PM local time.

It is not yet known if the couple were infected with the Omicron variant, but they were among the 61 passengers that tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Amsterdam.

The couple have already been handed over to the Dutch Health Service while the Public Prosecution Service will decide on the legal status of the suspects.

“The same rules apply to them as to other travelers who tested positive,” said the spokesman for mayor Schuurmans.
