CNN has stopped giving access to its Facebook page in Australia after the local high court ruled that news organizations are now legally liable for comments on their Facebook posts.
The Australian High Court said that media companies are liable for any defamatory content like comments that are on them because they are considered publishers.
“We are disappointed that Facebook, once again, has failed to ensure its platform is a place for credible journalism and productive dialogue around current events among its users,” said CNN.
CNN however said that they would still provide content for Australians on their own platforms.
Facebook defended that they are not qualified to provide legal guidance to CNN but have provided them the necessary tools to help them manage comments on their page.
Facebook added that it supported the new ruling and that they will “continue to provide Australians a destination for quality journalism, including through Facebook News which we launched in August.”
