China Warns of ‘Drastic Measures’ If Taiwan Insists on Independence

A Beijing official warned on Wednesday that China will take “drastic measures” if Taiwan continues to insist its independence, adding that Taiwan’s provocations and foreign meddling could intensify next year.

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, told a media briefing that while Beijing is willing to try its utmost to peacefully reunite with Taiwan, it would act if Taipei makes more moves toward independence.

“If separatist forces in Taiwan seeking independence provoke, exert force or even break through any red line, we will have to take drastic measures,” Ma said.

Ma added that provocation from separatists movements and intervention from foreign countries could grow “sharper and more intense” in the following months, adding that the situation in the Taiwan Strait will become more complicated in 2022.

Beijing has been sending air forces over the Taiwan Strait in the recent months as it pressures the democratically governed Taiwan to recognize itself as a territory of China.
