Canada Surpasses Two Million COVID-19 Cases

Canada on Dec. 27 surpassed two million COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic despite many provinces and territories not reporting numbers over the holiday weekend.

The COVID-19 Tracker by CTV News showed that Canada reached 2,035,831 cases, 168,431 of which are active.

The province of Ontario reported the highest number of new cases at 9,418 on Dec. 27, the fourth day in a row that it has reported over 9,000 daily cases.

However, health officials warn that the true number may likely be higher as many jurisdictions did not submit tallies over the holiday weekend and testing surveys are overwhelmed by the surge of cases.

The number comes as hospitals brace for the new Omicron variant, which has fueled a sharp increase of cases across the country.

Canada also recorded a total of 30,184 deaths since the pandemic began.
