At least 13 people, including a one-year-old child, died after falling into a well during a ceremony in northern India, officials said.
The victims — all women and children — were sitting on a metal slab covering the well when it gave way due to their weight, according to the police in the Kushinagar district in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Police said 11 people immediately died while two others later died in the hospital during treatment.
Police also said one other person was still in the hospital for injuries.
Police did not immediately identify the victims.
Kushinagar’s Senior Police Official Sachindra Patel said that officials are investigating the case.
The incident occurred during a “haldi” ceremony, a pre-wedding Hindu tradition where relatives apply turmeric to the bride and groom’s face for good luck.
Modi announced that each of the victims’ families will receive a compensation of $2,662 and $665 to the injured, CNN affiliate News-18 reported.
Kushnigar district authorities announced an additional $5,323 to each of the victim’s families, News-18 further reported.
