Angourie Rice on Her ‘No Way Home’ Easter Egg and “Heartbreaking” ‘Mare of Easttown’ Scene

Angourie Rice began 2021 on HBO’s Mare of Easttown, one of the year’s most highly praised dramas, and ended the year with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the pandemic era’s greatest movie.

Rice, a native Australian, was relieved to be able to film Mare and No Way Home on the same trip to the United States, as each travel home at the time required a two-week hotel quarantine.

Rice has portrayed Midtown High newscaster Betty Brant throughout Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, and her character is now an intern for J.

The Daily Bugle by Jonah Jameson. She even promoted the film as a character on the Daily Bugle’s official TikTok account, which she shot remotely in Australia.

Rice was only featured in one scene in No Way Home but she was able to carry on the rich history of saying, “Go get ’em, tiger,” a reference to what Mary Jane “MJ” Watson nicknamed Peter Parker in 1960s Spider-Man comics.

Rice also reflected on her most mature part to date, as Siobhan Sheehan in Mare of Easttown, the daughter of Kate Winslet’s Mare Sheehan and granddaughter of Jean Smart’s Helen.

Rice discovered that devotion and kindness are not mutually incompatible while working with Winslet and Smart.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in movie theaters.
