Amnesty: Tigrayan Forces Raped Ethiopian Women

Amnesty International reported that Tigrayan rebel forces have raped and beaten women during their attack on Nifas Mewcha in Ethiopia’s Amhara region between 12 and 21 August 2021.

According to survivors of the attack, they were raped at gunpoint, robbed, and physically and verbally assaulted by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) last August.

“Three of them raped me while my children were crying. They slapped me (and) kicked me. They were cocking their guns as if they are going to shoot me,” said some of the 16 survivors during a video interview.

The Amhara local government desk officer for Women, Children and Youth Affairs said that 71 women reported that they were raped by while the Federal Ministry of Justice said it was 73.

The victims were also unable to get proper post-rape care after Tigrayan forces reportedly looted the hospitals.

“The testimonies we heard from survivors describe despicable acts by TPLF fighters that amount to war crimes, and potentially crimes against humanity. They defy morality or any iota of humanity,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.
