20 People Die of Cholera in Past 24 Hours in Southern Afghanistan

At least 20 people, most of them children, have died from cholera in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province in the past 24 hours.

State news agency Bakhtar reported Monday that the cholera outbreak was reported in Baghran district and medical teams from neighboring Nawmesh and Lashkargah districts have been sent to the area to provide treatment.

Another 120 children were infected with the virus during the span of time and are under medical treatment.

Public Health Director for the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Naqibullah Fateh said that doctors and medical teams had been engaged in relief activities as well as launched an awareness campaign to the people to help reduce the spread of the virus among them.

Fateh also called on the NGOs working in the area of health, to immediately help them to control chorale disease.
