UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi said that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine is “out of control.”
“You have a catalogue of things that should never be happening in any nuclear facility,” said Grossi.
Russian forces have been reportedly using the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as an artillery nest and have been using it as cover against Ukrainian counter-offensives.
Russian official Yevgeny Balitsky said they are willing and ready to show the IAEA that they are protecting the plant while Ukraine is posing a threat.
Grossi said that they are already planning a site visit but lack the approval from Russia, Ukraine, and the UN.
Ukraine’s state nuclear company Energoatom said they have not invited the IAEA because any visit would legitimize Russia’s occupation.
“While this war rages on, inaction is unconscionable. If an accident occurs at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, we will not have a natural disaster to blame – we will have only ourselves to answer to. We need everyone’s support,” said Grossi.
