Russian Court Finds Brittney Griner Guilty of Drug Smuggling and Possession.

The Khimki city court has found two-time Olympic basketball champion American Brittney Griner guilty of drug possession and smuggling.

“Brittney Yvette Griner committed illegal possession and transportation of drugs through the customs zone,” said Judge Anna Sotnikova.

Sotnikova added that Griner  will serve nine years in prison with a fine of 1 million rubles ($16,576.88 USD.)

Griner was arrested in Moscow on February 17, 2022 after she was reportedly caught with hash oil in her baggage.

According to the court, Griner was found guilty under Part 1 of Art. 228 (illegal acquisition, storage, transportation of drugs without the purpose of sale) and part 2 of Art. 229.1 (smuggling of narcotic drugs in a significant amount) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

Griner admitted that she put the hash oil in her bag but had no intent to smuggle it into Russia.

Griner’s lawyer Maria Blagovolina said that they would appeal her sentence.

“The court completely ignored the arguments of the defense and the admission of guilt by the defendant. Taking it into account, we consider the term of punishment imposed by the court to be absolutely unreasonable. We will file an appeal,” said Blagovolina.
