Taiwan Protests China Military Exercises, Accuses them of Blockading Waters

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said that China’s military drills around the island are a threat to safety and accused them of blockading maritime lanes.

“This unilateral effort to undermine regional peace and stability will not help China’s international image and will hurt the feelings of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait,” said the MND.

The Chinese military drills are currently being held in the Taiwan Strait,  Bashi Channel, East China Sea, and the Pacific, surrounding the island from all sides.

China announced the drills in response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ‘s arrival in Taiwan on Tuesday and they are expected to continue until Sunday.

All naval and aerial craft were told to stay away from the area as the drills involved live ammunition.

Pelosi had already left Taiwan for South Korea on Wednesday evening after meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen, local politicians and human rights activists.
