Iran Ratifies Prisoner Swap Treaty With Belgium

Iranian lawmakers on Wednesday ratified a treaty with Belgium that will allow prisoner exchanges between the two countries.

Iran’s parliament approved the treaty by 195 votes to two. Two weeks ago, the Belgian parliament approved a treaty with 79 votes to 41 that could allow Iranians convicted of terrorism in Belgium to be sent back to Tehran.

The Belgian opposition said that Iran is looking to secure the release of Assadollah Assadi, the diplomat sentenced last year to a 20-year jail term for orchestrating a foiled 2018 bomb plot targeting a meeting outside the French capital of Paris.

The Belgian government said the deal with Tehran was the only way to free aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele who has been in Iranian jail since February.
