China Warns Airlines to Avoid Areas Near Taiwan

China warned airlines on Tuesday to avoid flying in areas near Taiwan where it is conducting military exercises in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei.

Jang Chang Seog, a South Korean transport ministry official, said that Beijing identified six “danger zones” for the airlines it warned.

Korean Air, a South Korean airline, told Bloomberg that it would reroute some flights to South Asia to avoid Taiwanese airspace over the next few days.

Cathay Pacific, an airline based in Hong Kong, advised pilots to carry extra fuel if they needed to reroute.

China’s warning comes amid Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, as China announced it would hold military exercises, including live drills, near Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday after she landed in the country.
