US to Send $550m Worth of Weapons to Kyiv

The United States announced on Monday a new tranche of weapons in military aid to Ukraine, including ammunition for rocket launchers and artillery guns.

“Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) announces the authorization of a Presidential Drawdown of security assistance valued at up to $550 million to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defense needs,” the Pentagon said in a release.

According to National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby, the new $550m package will “include more ammunition for the high mobility advanced rocket systems (HIMARS), and ammunition” for artillery.

Reports said HIMARS has superior range and precision, with rockets able to fly as far as 80 kilometers (about 49.71 mi).

The Pentagon said the assistance would include 75,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition.

“To meet its evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities,” the statement read.
