Cuban athlete Yaimé Pérez has defected from the Cuban delegation for the World Championships in the US during a layover in Miami.
Yaimé Pérez, Olympic bronze medal discus thrower, abandoned the Cuban delegation while on a layover at Miami International Airport (MIA).
Pérez defected the Cuban delegation after competing in the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she finished seventh.
The Cuban delegation had split into three groups upon its return to Havana, with the first team in Cuba and the others remaining in the US.
Pérez is the third member of the Cuban delegation to leave after Yiselena Ballar, a 19-year-old javelin thrower, defected from Cuba on the way to the World Championships.
Carlos González Morales, their team’s physiotherapist, also defected the Cuban delegation on the same day as Pérez.
