Turkish President To Visit Russia Next Week

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi on August 5.

The Turkish presidency confirmed Erdogan’s visit but did not provide details.

The visit comes after the two leaders met on the sidelines of a Syria summit in Tehran on July 19. This was their first meeting since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

Erdogan had repeatedly shown willingness to mediate between Russia and Ukraine to help end the five-month war and invited the two leaders to Turkey for direct talks.

Turkey also paved the way for signing an UN-brokered landmark deal in Istanbul last week aimed at resuming grain shipments across the Black Sea port after months of blockage due to the war.

Erdogan had earlier asked involved parties to respect the agreement and resume grain export soon.
