Hundreds of Lufthansa Flights Cancelled Due to Staff Strike

Lufthansa has cancelled hundreds of flights following scheduled worker’s strikes at several of its hubs.

The trade union Verdi recently called for around 20,000 Lufthansa ground crew to hold a strike to pressure the ongoing salary negotiations.

According to Lufthansa, 678 flights have been cancelled in Frankfurt, 32 of them on Tuesday and the rest on Wednesday, along with 345 in Munich, including 15 on Tuesday.

Around 92,000 passengers will be affected by the Frankfurt cancellations and 42,000 in Munich.

More cancellations are expected for Thursday and Friday, while similar scenarios may occur in Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, and Stuttgart airports.

Lufthansa warned that there is a possibility that rebooking services would not be available due to a shortage of service desks.

“(It is an) early escalation after only two days of negotiations in what has so far been a constructive collective bargaining round,” said Michael Niggemann, the chief of human resources at Lufthansa.
