Bolsonaro Launches Re-Election Bid

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has formally begun his reelection campaign despite being far behind his top competitor in the polls.

At a stadium in Rio de Janeiro, thousands of Bolsonaro’s fans gathered to show their support.

Bolsanaro pledged to keep a social program that gives lower-income Brazilians cash payments.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro’s competitor on the left, is well recognized for his anti-poverty initiatives.

The right-wing Liberal Party formally endorsed Bolsonaro’s bid for president.

There will be an election on October 2.

Bolsonaro informed his supporters during the rally at Maracanzinho stadium that the “army is on our side.”

The left-leaning Worker’s Party formally nominated Lula, who previously held the office of president from 2003 to 2010, on Thursday.
