Japan’s Sakurajima volcano, located on the island of Kyushu — the southwesternmost of Japan’s main islands— erupted Sunday, prompting evacuations across the region.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) documented that the volcano erupted around 8:05 p.m. local time (7:05 a.m. ET).
Footage from the agency showed a cloud of smoke or volcanic ash rising from the volcano.
A Level 5 alert — the highest level — was called for people to evacuate. Residents in Kagoshima Prefecture and Kagoshima City are advised to exercise caution
