Russia Tells US to Respect Their Law in Griner Case

Russia has told the United States to respect its law after the US accused Moscow of “wrongfully” detaining American basketball star Brittney Griner.

Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova described the statement of Biden’s administration on Griner’s detention as “a political decision, biased, and illegitimate.”

Zakharova said the accusation was an attempt of the US to blame Russia for unreasonably detaining the US citizen.

Zakharova argued that other countries are not required to conform to some American states’ policies regarding legalizing drugs.

“If a US citizen was taken in connection with the fact that she was smuggling drugs, and she does not deny this, then this should be commensurate with our Russian local laws and not with those adopted in San Francisco, New York, and Washington,” Zakharova said.

Russia detained Griner in February after airport authorities found cannabis oil in the athlete’s luggage. During her second court appearance, Griner pleaded guilty to the accusation against her, saying she did not mean to carry drugs.
