Ranil Wickremesinghe Elected as Sri Lanka’s President

Sri Lanka’s Ministers to parliament have elected six-time PM and current acting president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, 73, as the nation’s eighth president.

Wickremesinghe, will complete the remainder of the term of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who resigned after fleeing the country.

Wickremesinghe’s election is expected to do little to calm widespread civil unrest as demonstrators have called for his resignation.

Sri Lanka, an island nation of approximately 22 million people experiencing a severe economic crisis. The country struggles with shortages of essential supplies including: food, fuel, and medicine.
