Indian police said unidentified assailants shot two Hindi journalists having tea at a restaurant in Sonbhadra district in a case of mistaken identity.
Sonbhadra police said Shyam Sundar Pandey and Laddu Pandey, working for a Hindi newspaper, were shot by two persons on a bike wearing helmets.
Sonbhadra Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Vinod Kumar Singh, said the attackers fired two to three times before fleeing the area.
The victims were rushed to BHU Medical College for treatment.
The police said it is investigating the possibility that the attack resulted from past disputes.
According to the police, Sundar works as a property dealer while Laddu owns a school.
“I am a very simple man and have not had any enmity with anybody in my life. Also, I did not report any controversial news or [conduct] a sting against anybody/organization,” Sundar said.
The police said it had provided security to the two journalists after the attack.
