Authorities reported two shark attacks off the coast of New York on Wednesday — the fifth attack on Long Island in two weeks.
Officers of Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau said they responded to Seaview Beach on Fire Island after a man was bitten by a shark late in the afternoon on Wednesday.
Police said the victim is a 49-year-old man from Arizona who was standing in waist-deep water when the shark approached from behind and bit him on his left wrist and buttocks.
On Wednesday morning, authorities said a shark attacked a 41-year-old man on a paddle board and suffered a 4-inch gash on his leg.
Suffolk County officials closed Smith Point Beach for swimming in the morning but reopened it in the afternoon.
“Our lifeguards are continuing to patrol the ocean to ensure the safety of all beachgoers,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone tweeted.
Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches closed earlier this month following previous incidents.
