Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the country’s interim president on Friday 15 July, 2022, until the parliament elects a successor to Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Wickremesinghe said that he would initiate steps to change the constitution to limit presidential powers and strengthen parliament in his short term.
Wickremesinghe also addressed the recent protests in Sri Lanka and said true protesters would not participate in such actions, referring to the demonstration on Wednesday where many soldiers were allegedly injured.
“There is a big difference between protesters and insurgents. We will take legal action against insurgents,” Wickremesinghe said.
The Prime Minister’s office said Wickremesinghe took his oath of office on Friday as Sri Lanka’s interim president before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
