Police Arrest Four for Murdering Afghan Sufism Preacher In India

Indian police arrested four persons charging them  with murdering a 28-year-old Sufism preacher from Afghanistan, who had been living in India as refugee for four years.

The victim, Ahmed Zarif Chishti, also known as Khwaja Zarif Baba Syed Zarif Chishti, was shot and killed on July 5, 2022 in a jungle area in the Nashik district of Maharashtra.

Police said that Chishti was killed by his “own men” because they wanted to usurp his properties worth at least 3 Crores Indian Rupees (around $375,738) after finding out Chishti’s wife was pregnant and that his unborn child would be the rightful heir of his wealth.

Nashik Rural Police Superintendent, Sachin Patil said that Deva Babasaheb Zinjad alias Patil 28, Ravindra Changdev Tore, 25, and Pawan Popat Aher, 26 were arrested in the case on suspicion.

Patil said that during investigation the trio had confessed to their crime and named the fourth suspect, Gafaar Ahmed Khan, 42 who later was detained.

Chashti, a Sufi preacher, had a large following on YouTube and other social platforms.

Patil said being a refugee, Chashti could not purchase properties in India, and so he used to make such transactions in the name of his follower Gafaar Ahmed Khan.
